With a successful and diverse business sector, a wide
range of attractions and world-class conference facilities,
Sydney is a prime conference venue. The natural beauty
of Sydney Harbour combines with the cosmopolitan flavour
of the city to make Sydney a spirited and exciting place
to visit.
Sydney city is centred around the harbour (Port Jackson)
and the Parramatta River. Sydney Harbour is regarded
as one of the world’s most beautiful harbours,
flanked by parklands, and the two most recognisable
Australian icons – The Sydney Opera House and
the Sydney Harbour Bridge.
The Sydney Opera House is the leading performing
arts centre in Australia, and is an internationally
recognised architectural masterpiece. It serves as
a venue for performing arts including classical and
contemporary music, ballet, opera and drama, and is
instantly recognisable as an icon of Australia.
On the western side of the Sydney Opera House is
Circular Quay - the hub of Sydney Harbour. This is
the terminal for Sydney’s historic ferries,
international passenger liners and tourist cruise
vessels. Circular Quay also houses the train station.
This vibrant hub is located at the northern edge of
the huge Sydney Harbour Bridge.
The bridge, opened in 1932, is the world's largest
steel arch bridge. It spans 1149 metres from north
to south, and accommodates eight vehicle lanes, two
train lines, a footway and a bicycle path. Visitors
are able to climb the arch and enjoy panoramic views
of the Sydney skyline.
Tucked on the western shores of Sydney Cove at the
foot of the Sydney Harbour Bridge is The Rocks. This
is one of the oldest areas of Sydney and has historical
significance as the birthplace of the nation. The
Rocks contains cafes, restaurants, interesting tourist
shops and stalls.
